Weight Loss Wagon – Strategies to Get Back On! Remember those New Year’s Resolutions many of us made at the beginning of the year to lose weight and get healthier? Well, it’s been about 6 months since making the New Year’s Resolution, so I thought it would be a good time to check in and give you an update on my progress, see how you are doing and to offer a few words of encouragement, as well as, a few tips!
If you are continuing to stick to your resolution, give yourself a HUGE pat on the back. While about 45% of Americans make New Year’s Resolutions each year, according to a study by the University of Scranton Journal of Clinical Psychology Published on 12/13/2012, only 8% of us actually follow thru with those commitments. Why? Because it’s HARD to break bad habits and change your ways! Like my friend Dondell Green from Next Level Training & Motivation says, “If it was easy, then EVERYBODY would be doing it!” Truer words were never spoken!!!
MY STORY: As someone who has spent the majority of her life in size 4 to 6 clothing, I was shocked to realize that after about 2 years of sitting on my behind and blogging, I had packed on over 50 pounds!!! Being a former pageant title-holder, I had long ago learned how to dress lighter than I look. Therefore, while many people noticed that I had gained weight; they had no clue I had gained THAT much weight. When I realized that I couldn’t navigate my way through life wearing sweat pants, I decided to head on over to Healthy Solutions of Thomasville.
A few years ago when I had put on 15 pounds and was about to outgrow my 6′s, I went to Healthy Solutions and dropped the weight in record time. In fact, I was stunned to have lost more than 9 pounds in the first week! So, I naturally went back to them to rid myself of the “blogger’s butt” I had acquired.
Since going back to Healthy Solutions, I have dropped 32 pounds and I am back into my size 6 clothing. However, I still have about 20 more pounds to lose. Have I stuck to the eating plan 24/7? NO!! However, I have still managed to lose weight every week, because in the end, what it all boils down to is consistency. I found what works for me and even though I may fall off the proverbial weight loss wagon from time to time, I’ve learned how to get back on.
If you have fallen short of your weight loss goals and feel like it’s hopeless, don’t give up hope. I have a few tried and true tips to help you get back on the wagon in record time!

1. Hop on the scale.
Fess up, then simply start all over again. You’ve got to be honest with yourself about what you weigh, what you’re eating, and how much and if you’re exercising. The scale is the first place to start.
2. Track your food.
A food journal is an essential weight loss tool. It’s one of the keys to the Weight Watchers system but you can find free online food journals like the one at myfooddiary.com or sparkpeople.com. By writing everything down, you become aware of what goes into your mouth and are better equipped to make wise food decisions.
3. Aim for progress not perfection.
No one is perfect. Don’t impose unrealistic expectations on yourself or you will set yourself up for failure. Plan to cheat (in moderation, of course), but realize that it does not mean you throw out your eating plan. Even though I have cheated on my diet, I STILL lose weight every week and make progress. When you fall off the wagon, what really matters is how you deal with the slip-ups when they happen. Always remember that you are not powerless. You have a choice. Choose to make progress and don’t allow failure to be final.
4. Analyze and visualize.
Look back at what you did in the past and where you got off track, then commit to changing that specific behavior. If you’ve been avoiding exercise, then remember how good you felt after exercising. If you went on an Oreo binge, then figure out why. Were you emotionally eating? Next time instead of grabbing the Oreos, will you simply go for a walk? Visualize yourself in the jeans you haven’t been able to fit into in years. Remember how healthy and good it felt to comfortably fit into them and the compliments you may have received. Never underestimate the power of positive thinking!
If you have fallen off the weight loss wagon, like so many of us have from time to time, then use the tips I shared above to keep moving forward. Don’t give up. Just focus on losing one pound at the time and staying on your eating plan one day at the time. You are more likely to be successful by NOT focusing on the entire amount of weight instead of just one single pound at the time. You can do it! Don’t let past failures define you. Let how you battle back from adversity be what defines you. Get back on the weight loss wagon and move forward with the New Years’ Resolution to lose weight you made several months ago. Aim for progress, not perfection.
